Researchers theorized that the downregulation of the HER-2/neu gene is responsible for Epitalon's ability to inhibit the production of mammary tumors.

Epitalon is also considered a strong antioxidant that may be beneficial for longevity. Researchers examined the protective effects of Epitalon on age-damaged post-ovulatory oocytes in vitro in female mice. The results showed that Epitalon works as an antioxidant, reducing the number of reactive oxygen series present. The study also found that Epitalon regulates mitochondrial activity, leading to increased membrane potential, increased copy number of DNA, and decreased apoptosis of oocytes, ultimately delaying age-related damage.
